Six Flags New Orleans (New Orleans, LA): While this place doesnt - TopicsExpress

Six Flags New Orleans (New Orleans, LA): While this place doesnt rightfully qualify as a legitimate Halloween attraction, Im including it anyway in my 2014 itinerary. Stopping here on my way to 13th Gate was not my idea, but it turned out to be an amazing experience and one I wont soon forget. It also gave me a fun tale to tell for many years to come. As everyone knows, Hurricane Katrina decimated this area back in the mid-2000s. This amusement park was almost completely submerged in flood waters, along with everything else around the area. Since then, virtually no efforts have been made to restore the park to any sort of usable condition. So it continues to rot in the distance from the New Orleans highway for all to see. Serving as a morbid reminder of dreadful days gone by. It appeared on the horizon as we made our way down the sunny highway Sat. afternoon. We pulled up to the gates which were closed, not allowing any sort of vehicle entrance. No trespassing signs were abundant. It looked like wed have to make it on foot from here. We parked behind another suspiciously parked car by the side of the road, and made our way across an open field that led around the sealed gates. It was humid and in the upper 80s, so it didnt take long to become a sweaty pig. The field eventually gave way to a lake that surrounded the decaying park in the distance. The entrance road ran alongside so we hopped on that and followed it the rest of the way in, trying to stay out of sight of the nearby highway. There were plenty of holes in the perimeter fence, so we had no problem getting in. Piles of corroded junk and debris lay in heaps around the outer yard. We continued onward toward the large wooden coaster that we had entered near. We climbed over some barriers that lead to the former coasters cheque line, and then up the wooden scaffolding to reach a higher vantage point. Once atop the ride, we had a good visual of that side of the former park. Overgrown vegetation and rotting wood had taken over here. AAn eerie since hung in the air. We descended the rotting stairs and into the park itself. As we walked away from the wooden coaster, faint sounds could be heard in the distance. As we moved closer, it became apparent that we were not alone. I decided at that point we should head in the opposite direction and make our way out of there as quickly and smartly as possible. We made our way back down the overgrown path towards some park facility buildings. The actual entrance way to the park was just beyond there, so we made haste getting the f*ck out of there. Who knows what sort of individuals were lurking about in that cursed place. I did not want to stick around to find out. We climbed back out through the hole in the fence, and made our way down the park drive. We passed a flume ride car laying at the side of the road that mustve floated off the ride and all the way over there during the flood. Creepy. It was a long walk back in the heat, but luckily my rental car was still there. Enterprise would not have been pleased had it gotten impounded for trespassing. But what a cool thing to do. It was dangerous and risky, but when ever would I have the chance to do this again? Especially considering the talk of demolishing the place in the near future. And it was free! I can honestly say that this was the creepiest place Ive been to so far this year. Never done anything like it. And on that note, it was time to grab some grub and head on out to Baton Rouge. 13th Gate would be open soon and I wanted to be punctual... Hauntfinder Rating: CREEPY!
