A deepening low pressure system currently over northern Georgian Bay will continue to track through Northeastern Ontario tonight. Snow at times heavy is expected tonight in a swath from Dowling northward through Gogoma and into Timmins and Little Abitibi regions. Areas near or just west of Kirkland Lake through Gowganda will also be affected. Snowfall amounts near 15 cm with local amounts up to 20 cm can be expected by Christmas morning. The City of Sudbury, Manitoulin Island and Killarney are quite close to the rain - snow boundary with rain forecast to change to snow tonight. General snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm can be expected with possible higher amounts mainly over western sections. Blowing snow is expected in some places Christmas morning. Motorists travelling for the Christmas Holidays should expect driving conditions to deteriorate quickly after the snow arrives. Low visibility in areas of heavier snow and accumulating snow on untreated highways will result in hazardous winter driving conditions. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
