So....I changed my profile picture last week to Bill Murray for a reason. Not only is he a great actor, but he also doles out quality advice completely unsolicited and off the cuff for no reason other that the guy is just cool. Right before Linda and I left for our first vacation together (just her and I for a change), I happened upon an article about how Bill Murray crashed a random persons bachelor party and offered up this piece of advice; Take that person and travel around the world. Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world, and go to places that are hard to go to and hard to get out of. And if when you come back to JFK, when you land in JFK, and youre still in love with that person, get married at the airport. Awesome advice. Except for the fact that Linda and I already planned the Hocking Hills trip and I only had two days off of work plus a weekend to fly around the world in, well just substitute a three hour trip to Southern Ohio in place of the plane tickets and international travel to keep the story moving along. Linda and I rarely argue, if we do its usually resolved quickly and painlessly (I chalk this up to using Spock-like logic to wear her down until she just quits and forfeits the win to me) so I figured this would be a great test of our relationship to see if we should take things to the next level or not. Now being that we have only been together for 12 years or so at the time of this writing, I knew if we could get through this weekend together without any violence or tears that this girl may just be washing my laundry and picking up after me for years to come, all while I give very little in return save for rugged good looks, quality conversation, and bi-annual back-rubs. And the point; Linda and I went hiking second day, we climbed up a big ass tower in the middle of the freaking woods, she asked me I was going to propose someday, I said possibly, then she said Itd be a lot cooler if you did. So I pulled out a ring and asked her to marry me. She can now call me her fiance. We then gripped the rails of the swaying tower tightly and made out like teenagers in love for two or three minutes. Then we took selfies and climbed down. Wrapping up; Bill Murray unknowingly gave me some great advice right that applied to us at the exact time I read his quote. I truly believe that if you can do something even remotely similar to what he said with someone, you will know that your relationship is one that can last. Linda gives me the freedom to train jiu-jitsu multiple times a week for hours per day, travel all over the place for jiu-jitsu, and even take vacations without her...just so I can do jiu-jitsu like a selfish jerk. Q: Why would she put up with this behavior? A: Because she loves me, and you support each other in a relationship. I will love her forever, shes the love of my life, soon to be my wife. And at the pace I am going, she can expect that next step taken to be around 2020. Alright, alright, alright.
