So I decided to listen to Far From the Tree (the Andrew Solomon book) on my Nano while running my long runs leading up to the marathon. (Im a nerd .. Thats how we roll.) I had thought about reading the book before, but ever since I heard his interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, I decided to bump it up on the to-read list. As I was running along today (on the marathon course--Route 16 in Wellesley) I actually had to stop, because the book brought me to tears. This quote in particular, resonated with me. Its one that Solomon refers to by the writer, Clara Claiborne Park. She wrote it in the early 70s about her autistic daughter. I write now what 15 years past I would still not have thought possible to write: that if today I were given the choice to accept the experience, with everything that it entails, or to refuse the bitter largesse, I would have to stretch out my hands -- because out of it has come, for all of us, an unimagined life. And I will not change the last word of the story. It is still love. Today -- and every day. I stretch out my hands. I choose the last word of our story even now. It too will be love.
