So I just listened to an interview between Anderson Cooper and the Seal Team Six member that has recently come out as transgender. What she is most concerned with is looking presentable and not being beaten up by strangers. She is so very typical of most transgender people in their first couple of years of transition. Fear. I wish I could grab all of these people and shake them and tell them to hold her head up high. I want to tell them that they are not second-class citizens. I want to teach them to be defiant and confident. I want to teach them to be happy with themselves and to be proud they are. Why so many of my people act so weak, when in fact they are so strong. They have faced and gone through more than most human beings will ever suffer, yet they consider themselves weak and inadequate. I thought that in the 13 years since I started transition that I and others have made great headway in making the world a more acceptable place for those that are coming out today. Clearly, I have deluded myself. My own arrogance keeps me from seeing that so much more work needs to be done.
