So, I was thinking today. I hate waiting on the microwave. Cant stand to wait at red lights most the time. When I dine out, I get impatient waiting on my food. I am an impatient man. I am going through what feels like one of the greatest trials in my life, the separation of my marriage. I am by no means divorced and there is no talk or plans of it. But I have hurt my marriage. Between you and me. It was one neither my wife nor I wanted anymore. I want a better marriage. A renewed and mutually loving and sacrificial marriage that serves The Lord first and each other second. Our kids and then others and so on down the line. The Lord has some work to do on me before we get there. One of these is patience. What is patience? Patience is enduring or waiting, as a determination of will. Its not merely enduring trials as a matter of necessity. Patience is a strong determination of will, to victoriously overcome the negative things we confront, according to Gods will. Paul tells us to put on a heart of patience. So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience (Col. 3:12). Patience is just one part of the heart we put on as Christians. But the point I want to make is that we must put it on. It is not something that just happens. It, for me, is an effort i must make. Patience is a deliberate and willful attitude. How Do We Put On a Heart of Patience? Before making the statement in Colossians 3:12, to put on a heart of patience, Paul tells us how to obtain the strength to be patient. . . . we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously (Col. 1:9-11). In a nutshell, we go to Gods word, understand it, and apply it to our lives with all spiritual wisdom. As a result, Gods word performs its work in us, and were empowered to be patient in whatever circumstances we live. This is no easy task for some of us. We must be willing to put the effort into it for the betterment of ourselves and others. Also, notice Pauls example of praying for strength. Its good and proper for us to pray for strength, trusting God to empower us through the knowledge of His word, whereby we bear fruit in every good work -- including patience (Col. 1:10-11). Its difficult to endure suffering. But if you put on the right heart, the heart of a faithful Christian, you will put on a heart of patience Youll be strengthened with all power according to Gods glorious might, to patiently overcome every trial in life. We humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, casting all our anxiety on Him, because He cares for us. Then we patiently endure as we trust in God, who is in control of all things. Just sayin.
