So Im in Home Depot looking for some stain and this woman (Id rather not point out her nationality) is with her son (who looks to be around 10-yrs old) and theyre both standing next to me waiting to speak to one of the reps behind the paint counter. She suddenly decides to go behind the counter to look at some paint. Now heres where it gets interesting. She then turns, looks at me, and yells back to her son, Make sure you keep an eye on my purse! I got angry at first, which then turned to disappointment that she would so incorrectly and blatantly prejudge me as a thief and it was obviously because of the color of my skin/appearance. Im unsure if she knows how hurtful her actions were and the negative impact it had on me, as Im sure it would any African American man with integrity. She has no idea of who I am, the sacrifices Ive made and continue to make to serve my country, and yet she felt the need to make an unwarranted and unnecessary insult. I have to forgive her and not because Im trying to be the better person. Rather, its because I dont want to allow her racism to put hatred into my heart. SMDH...
