So Ive seen a large amount of posts the last couple of days championing individuals with special needs, and thats great. I think most people know I have a background working within Special Education. Perhaps my biggest pet peeve though is how people, including a major television station, reference these individuals. They are students that have ADHD, not ADHD kids. Students who receive Special Education Services not Special Ed Students. Above everything, its person first. Kids are kids, students are students, regardless of any other factors. People dont have disabilities, they have DIFFERENT abilities. When I worked at Apollo in St. Cloud I had the privilege of working with a young man who had a lot of challenges in school. He couldnt read well, hated math and struggled with daily academics. I was fortunate however to watch him (and the rest of his family) perform with a fantastic ballet company - and he was good. On that stage school didnt matter, he was doing so thing he excelled at. The point being, we all have things that were good at, and things that we struggle with. Would you like to be defined by the things in your life that you struggle with? I know I wouldnt. ;)
