So Laura Behrens included me in a project to fill Facebook with beautiful music as a contrast to the selfies, political ads, and other overwhelming noise. She assigned me the letter G. How can a selection for letter G be anything or at least start with anything other than Grieg -- and then there are so many recordings and pieces -- Grieg captured the spirit of his country and heritage in so many music lyrics, instrumental and vocal. This an Emil Gilels recording from the 70s of Lyric Pieces. Its posted in 2 parts on YouTube. Gilels captures the spirit and the nuance of these pieces - each perhaps a minature masterpiece. youtube/watch?v=670TAR8piwA On a side note, I have to mention the Bamberg Symphony which over the years has produced some remarkable recordings of Griegs music. I grew up listening to their recording of the Lyric Suite, among others. While not a major orchestra, they play with great sensitivity and capture the spirit of Griegs music as well.
