So,Southampton it is…… Finally the news we’ve been waiting for ! Royal Caribbean Cruises announce that the next Quantum Class ship ‘Anthem of the Seas’ is to be based in Southampton for the summer of 2015. The 4,180-passenger vessel, the second in its class, will then sail from Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades in the winter 2015/2016. This is great news for Southampton as they predict over 80,000 people will travel on ‘Anthem’ during the summer bringing in an estimated £50 million to the local area. Traffic may become an issue if she is in at the same time as other ships such as a Cunard, P&O or Celebrity. Think about it, you could have 10 – 20,000 passengers converging on Southampton for a 5pm departure. Do you live in the local area and get affected by this?? Thinking about the size of the ship, which ports in europe can take a ship of that size? At 167,800 tonnes the obvious ones I suppose like Barcelona, Civitavecchia, Livorno could take Anthem but I wonder where else? Itineraries will be released in the new year with prices soon after. Obviously this is going to sell extremely well because of the novelty factor, but what affect will it have on the other cruise lines.
