So here is my rant for today: I own a Pitbull, yes an American - TopicsExpress

So here is my rant for today: I own a Pitbull, yes an American Terrier Pitbull to be specific! His name is Chewbacca and he is 11 months old. We didnt get Chewie from a shelter, we didnt adopt him. He was given to us under the circumstance that he was bred and he couldnt be sold off. So we were just practically handed a 4 month old pitbull the week we bought our home. That being said, weve gone through ALOT with Chewbacca. Hes so mischievous, he tears up shoes, cords, toilet paper, socks, anything that he can get his paws on basically. He barks very loud when he sees someone come inside our home thats not myself, my husband or Ayden. He growls at them and makes them understand that he is alerting us that they are intruding in our home. He hasnt bit me or anyone but he has scratched me with his nails, not on purpose clearly. When we take him to a dog park he loves the bigger dogs because he knows he can play rough with them but hes unaware of how to handle small dogs with big personalities and of course the owners of the small dogs just pick up their dogs and walk away from Chewbacca. Hes a big boy yes, 62 pounds and considers himself a lap dog because all he wants to do is cuddle and give sloppy kisses. However with all the above that I said about my dog, heres what I dont understand; as humans we tend to generalize people and or other living creatures into categories that cant transcend for every specie of their breed or race. To say ALL PITBULLS ARE DANGEROUS AND KILL is like saying ALL LATINOS ARE GANG MEMBERS. While yes there are pitbulls who have killed and Latinos that are in gangs clearly not everyone or every pit can be categorized as such. Ill admit at times I think to myself why didnt I just buy a little Yorkie or a little Maltese instead of getting handed this Pitbull and I would have been spared from a lot of trouble. People wouldnt be afraid to come see me at my home or afraid to even walk on the same side of the sidewalk as my dog and I. I wouldnt have people telling me ALL THE TIME how dangerous my dog will be after the puppy stage or how many attacks against children there have been. Or my favorite arent you guys afraid of how hell be when the baby is born? I know people who say that are not always saying it with negative intentions towards us but they never once think about how they categorize Chewbacca amongst such stereotypes. Like all things in my life there is a purpose as to why theyre there. Chewie is my comfort and my protector. In these last couple of months I have been down for many things that have gone on in my life and my dog is always there for me licking my tears off my face and making sure Im ok by just resting his big head on my shoulders as I cry. How can people say this dog is inherently dangerous when it has the instinct to understand emotion? I love my Chewbacca and I will continue to advocate for him by educating those around me that hes not a vicious killer and or dangerous. So the next time you all see a pitbull walking with its owner I challenge you all to look past your negative connotations that the media or people who dont even OWN the dog as a pet have given you. Not a sermon just a thought.
