So heres the good news. The venerable New Yorker has written a glowing (one might say fulsome) profile of Inuit throat singer Tagaq. On the down side? The New Yorkers grasp of Canadian geography, or at least, of Canadian place names, leaves a bit to be desired. And the last line of this piece strikes me as very disturbing. I mean, I understand the point the writer is trying to make. But seriously. Indians in cases are less scary? Would he say that about any other ethnocultural group? Are Jews in ovens less scary? Are bears in cages less scary? Or am I just being hypersensitive? After all, the pieces is overwhelming positive. Theres just something about the tone that strikes me as Rousseau-eaquely patronizing, treating a talented musical artist more as an exotic noble savage on display than as a serious musician.
