So many people do not have a clue what the duties of the United States Coast Guard are. First put things in the proper perspective. NY City has about 52,000 police officers. The Coast Guard has around 38,000 active duty and are stationed all around the world. Besides Search and Rescue that most people are aware are the duties of a Coastie, there are many others. Law Enforcement at the Federal level, Marine Environmental Safety, Aids To Navigation not to forget to mention, also a branch of the Military. The Coast Guard has seen action in every military conflict the United States has been in. This certainly was the toughest job I have every had but it was also the most rewarding and if I could come out of retirement I would be back in and still serving :).
