So, youve probably heard of space junk. I just read a Popular Science article about it, scary numbers and stuff. 100 million objects, probably as small as nuts and bolts or smaller, 17,000 of them of any significant size. These are located within a sphere 31,000 miles in radius. A few fun facts about this allegedly scary problem. The vast majority of these objects are in orbit going the same direction at the same speed as the objects near them, minimizing any collision risk. The big number-100 million objects? Each little crumb gets 1.25 million cubic miles to itself on average. A cube 108 miles on a side. The 17,000? 7.4 billion cubic miles. Over 1,900 miles on a side. A fender bender? Not looking to likely.... Just saying. Theres a lot of junk, but its few and far between.
