Somali parliament building in Mogadishu attacked by Al-Shabaab terrorists Al-Shabaab terrorists attacked the Somali Federal Parliament building in Mogadishu on Saturday (May 24) while the Assembly was in session. The attack involved a car bomb at the entrance of the building and a number of Al-Shabaab fighters broke into an unoccupied part the building. The attack was thwarted by the joint actions of AMISOM forces and Somali National Army forces and all those involved in the attack were believed to have been killed. Three members of parliament were injured as MPs were successfully evacuated through the back of the Parliament building. Commenting on the attack Somali’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said this was “yet another clear example of how al-Shabaab acts not in the interests of the Somali people but for its own, media-focused, perverse agenda”. Al-Shabaab has suffered great loses since AMISOM forces launched a campaign to free territories which were under al-Shabaab’s control earlier in the year. The Minister for National Security, Abdikarim Hussein Guled, tendered his resignation after the attack, and Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed accepted it. President Mohamud said the Prime Minister would appoint a new Minister for National Security as a matter of urgency and his first task would be to carry out an urgent review of Mogadishu security measures.
