Some cab unit images from years ago. The blue unit was spied through the open gate of a railroad equipment dealer in West Colton, CA, and was originally CNW 5022A, then Metra, and eventually ended up here. The dealers work also included the restoration of the number boards, as the CNW found no need for them. The Amtrak cab unit in black was at Naparano, a scrap dealer in Newark, NJ, and was about to lose the final part of its carbody. The extra-long handrails alongside the nose door, indicate its Atlantic Coast Line origins. The open platform diesel is a Long Island power car that was concocted from an FA2, to work with its new prototype multi-level commuter cars. The reason for removing the cab, and thus the cab-car aspect, which was the original purpose of converting the old Alcos, is beyond reason. In fact, a little more standard carbody had to be added, once the nose was eliminated, as the old cab door would have been centered over the front truck. The production multi-levels were different enough that the prototypes were sold off, and the power car was retired when new custom-design EMD locomotives, with HEP, eliminated its need.
