Some children are seeing delays of weeks or months to be immunized against whooping cough, diphtheria, polio and other serious illnesses. A shortage of nurses and clinic space has created a backlog, United Nurses of Alberta Local 211 (Calgary Community) president Jacki Capper told the Calgary Herald. “Parents are frustrated and concerned that their babies aren’t going to be protected. The worry is that it is only going to get worse and harder to get an appointment,” she said. “AHS has put in a few strategies to try to address the problem. But the population keeps increasing and there hasn’t been an increase in clinics since the 1990s. When new buildings open, the old ones close,” she said.
