Some of my favorite people are drummers. As a bass player, I have known and made music with quite a few, and I love each of them for the unique flavor they bring. I admire their ability. When I sit behind a drum kit, I feel out of my element. What? You want me to do four different things at the same time with my two feet and two hands! Head explodes! Here is a 30 minute peek into the mind of one of the greatest drummers of all time…Jeff Porcaro. Yes, it was made over 25 years ago, but still relevant. Jeff is the rare musician who can explain what he is doing and then break it down and teach you his amazing pockets. You may not like the smooth jazz demo it begins with, but slide over to 2:00 where he begins talking. I like the way he dissects the Bernard Purdie Shuffle, with some Bo Diddley dust sprinkled in at the 20:20 mark. youtu.be/VMOjR_Cf96k?list=RDpwyO1qr0edI Check out Jeff’s Discography. Really? How many artists/albums? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Porcaro#Discography If you are not a drummer, watching this video can help you understand how drummer’s think. Listen to him articulate rhythmic subdivision and other musical algorithms…while totally staying locked into the pulse/meter of the song. This is what we call...The Pocket.
