Some of you indicated that youre interested in the publishing process for a novel. Today I sent back the corrected copyedited manuscript for INSPECTOR OF THE DEAD. As I explained in an earlier post, at this stage the editing is about consistency of details, unintended repetitions, etc. I used this final opportunity to read through the text three times, looking for items that the copyeditor might have missed. No matter how much care I take, theres always something. But now the text is locked in. The next time a file is sent to me, the novel will be formatted for print publication, which means that I cant make any substantive changes without throwing off the formatting. At that stage, Ill basically be looking for spelling and format errors. Knowing that this was my last chance to change sentences and add details, I took a long breath before I hit the send button.
