Some of you who have been with us for a while know that we often experiment with many different things and techniques We try out these things in the field before we begin recommending them to you. Case in point is the candle heater. There are many different versions of this and some of you have probably seen some of these posted in the social networks already. I have seen some heated arguments about the validity of some of the claims associated with these heaters. The picture of the heater below is our version of the Clay pot heater. It is a tile terra cotta pipe sometimes called a chimney sleeve or drain pipe. Inside the pipe we set a few pillar candles up and let them go to work. Being at least three times more powerful than your standard candle heater ( when we go, we often go big ) we found there to be some validity to the claim. Although one of the standard candle heaters could never have done the job inside our poly tunnel, our 400 square-foot greenhouse couldve probably used another one of these candle sleeve set ups totaling six candles. The pipe was so hot I couldnt hold my hand on it so I imagine it will continue radiating heat for sometime after the candles have gone out. All in all I believe the original candle heater post to contain elements of truth but I believe there was a lot of exaggeration that went along with it. There are a lot of factors to take into consideration when thinking on heating your greenhouse or poly tunnel with these devices. The exact temperature outside, greenhouse materials ,the height and size of your tunnel are important variables to take into consideration. One of those original candle heaters might be perfect for a nice large cold frame or small geodesic dome. As for us Im sold on it but Ive realized that I must make it bigger in order for it to effectively work.The full story will be released on a blog later on this week with all our detailed notes on it.
