Someone mentioned on another site that they thought we needed an attacking midfielder that can create chances and split defences. Well I thought Barkley was playing that creative midfielder tear defences apart role? Hes not been as effective as last season for a number of reasons....1. he was injured and has only just come back. 2. Hes not being played in the hole and this has had an affect on Lukaku as they had a very good understanding between one another. Martinez for whatever reason has not been playing him there....either because hes missing a decent winger or Naismith having a good season there. Personally Id have Barkley in the hole over Naismith which seems unfair as Naismith is having a good season...but where Naismith is a grafter...Barkley is more creative and can do the unexpected. 3. Teams know what he can do and hes often heavily marked or closed down. I really dont know what has happened this season. We played some amazing football last season with almost the same squad of players. But the evidence was there for anyone who witnessed the pre-season. The players just looked jaded, slow, half arsed and the intensity from last season lacking. I like many other fans it was WC fatigue and that things would improve but from the reports things just havent improved..... Players havent hit the heights of last season...Coleman & Baines have not been anywhere near as affective....Jags and Distin have been rocky at times.....Barry who was rock solid has been making mistakes.......Mirallas and McGeady have been hit and miss....Mirallas has either been awesome, average or injured. McGeady hasnt shown me enough either. Lukaku has struggled also.....Injuries have played there part but I dont think thats the only factor.....We certainly miss the lightening pace of Delboy who also had the confidence and skill to compliment that pace.....He was a weapon that could come off the bench and change the game and cause defenders no end of trouble. Highlights have been McCarthy who has continued to work his arse off.....any one with an ounce of footballing sense can see how weve missed him in midfield. Besic has come in and from what Ive seen done a pretty good job considering its his first season in the EPL. Hes made some mistakes due to over confidence but at least hes trying.....Etoo has come in and proved he has something special to offer EFC....Many thought he was merely a panic signing but hes been anything but. Sadly, hes playing in a very different Everton team from last season.....I can only imagine what he would have done in the Everton team that were playing exciting attacking football.... Im not entirely sure Martinez is entirely to blame for the loss in form as the players need to take some responsibility for what happens on the pitch. They did it last season so why cant they replicate it this season is beyond me. They give me the impression that they think that one season was enough and theyd made it.... What I do think is that Martinez a victim of their his own success....many would have been a lot more forgiving if Everton had been like this in his first season in charge.....but the team responded above and beyond the majority of Evertonians expectations....Im the first to say I wasnt expecting what we served last season....playing under a completely different system and management style. Im still prepared to give Martinez my support because Ive watched the games and theyve certainly been lacking the quality we witnessed last season but certainly not as dire as many are saying. That doesnt mean Im happy with the performances but more I see this as a blip in the transition. Ill give Martinez another season or 3 to see whether he can reignite the magic of last season unless of course we start to flirt with relegation then I may change my stance but until that time Ill give him my support because hes our manager and were Everton arent we?
