Something to Consider... Transgender TV shows are not All-things Trans. In other words, they deal with a set of characters and the lives of those characters as the writers see fit to portray them. I think some trans folks get upset when they see a show like Transparent or Orange Is The New Black or others and they do not see all of the spectrum of transgender people represented in the show. First of all, the transgender umbrella is far too big for one show or even two to cover all the varieties of people there are and their way of expressing gender. Next, there is a story line and character bios that a show strictly adheres to to keep the show together and make the story lines make sense. Adding say a trans fluid person to a show mainly about a middle aged transwoman, may not fit into the story or the setting of that main character. So, you may not get the representation you would like in that particular show. Orange Is The New Black is a perfect example. It is about women in a womens jail. To have a transman in that story may not make sense at all or look like the transman was a token character added to make certain people happy. No one on Orange Is The New Black is against transmen I can assure you! Its just the plot and the story and the bios and the whole of what the show has as a goal. Sometimes you simply cant add all the characters and plots youd like because it would rob from the main point of the show and its lead characters. So be patient if say a segment of the trans community has no representation that it well deserves. A few years back no one, no one, would have thought that a transgender TV show would ever be a huge hit or even popular with a non-trans community, but it is! In time there will be a show or shows with characters that are BI, gender fluid, gender non-conforming and so much more. But why critisize shows that have made gigantic strides in trans equality and exposure as if they had done something wrong because they did not include this group or that group? Jenny Taylor
