Listening to Laura Nyros cover of this venerable Philly Soul chestnut got me in the mood to hear this one; Mr. Rogers Nelsons post-GOLD EXPERIENCE output has been kinda spotty (I dont give up hope, though; Ive been listening to his latest with 3rdEyeGirl recently and the jurys still out but I really think hes due for a resurgence) but he really nailed this; the arrangement is clever, with a different-key middle, some (I think) sampled drum fills in very appropriate places, a dash of horns, and some amazing vocal vamping as he sings it home (I wanna be I wanna be I wanna be yo man!). Anyhoo, give it a listen if youre not already familiar with it. From one of his symbol-era albums, 1996s EMANCIPATION, the first one not released via the auspices of the Brothers Warner.
