Sorry if some of you have seen this on my FB page but its a great story (sorry Valerie A. Davidian) Whenever I was back east visiting my mother, who was battling cancer and dementia, I would always try to do some things to balance out the sadness of those visits. On one on those trips east. I heard that Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers were playing the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. I had heard a lot about the band and knew of the Springsteen connection but had never heard them. I bought tickets to the show. I learned later that Soozie Tyrell and her band were added to the show so I thought there might be a chance that Springsteen would show. The show was scheduled to start at 7pm. My good friend Andy Bromberg and I got there about 7:25 to find a small line waiting outside as Soozie finished her soundcheck. At about 7:30, just as the doors opened, there was a minor commotion. It was Bruce driving his old Mercury convertible with Sean Penn in the front seat and Patti sitting on the top of the back seats like some kind of parade queen. They made the 1st left past the Pony as the crowd filed inside. I told Andy to grab a spot at the bar as I held back to see where Bruce went. I walked up the street to the tiny parking lot behind the Pony. There was Bruce putting something in the trunk of his car. When he was done I approached him and, as I had rehearsed in my head for years, thanked him for the soundtrack to my life. We wound up having about a 5 minute conversation. I walked to the stage door with him. When he was heading inside he shook my hand and thanked me for being a fan of him and his music for so many years. I floated down the street and went inside. Bruce later joined Joe Grushecky onstage for an hour and a half of amazing music. That show was 10 years ago today.
