Sorry to repeat this post from a couple of days ago, but maybe not many folks saw this and I got only two comments. This is a serious situation for this hive. They need feeding and yet are being killed by the feeder: I have two new hives this year. Earlier in the year I put hive top feeders on both. One hive consistently had dozens of dead bees drowned in the feeder, the other hive had only a couple of dead bees. I took both feeders off for the summer, but the weak hive (weakened to some extent by the lemming-like drownings) needed some help so I put a front board feeder on. When this took so much of my time in refilling, I put the top feeder back on. Since its late in the season, I also put a top feeder on the healthier hive. Same result: multiple drownings in one, few in the other. Anyone have any idea whats going on? This is what this mornings check reveals Dozens of dead bees in one top feeder. Zero dead in the other and the syrup all consumed in number 2. The bees in this picture under the floating grate are all dead. Im either going to have to stop feeding (which this weak hive desperately needs) or develop another method. But that still doesnt explain this mystery.
