Sorry to turn my facebook page into a blog but you dont have to read my post if you dont want to. Now that most of the relevant (and irrelevant) info is in on the Michael Brown shooting and the situation in Ferguson, MO, I will say that it continues to be obvious, as it has been for decades, to any person alive and awake in modern day American society, that there exists an extreme imbalance between the treatment of black citizens and white citizens within the U.S. at the hand of municipal police departments throughout the United States. Just to be clear, I do not believe that all police officers are bad, or that all police departments are corrupt or are lead by racists, but there are obviously many that still are. I also have much respect for those police officers who protect and serve without discrimination and abuse of power. Non-violent protests are not always pretty, but are a right of every citizen and a natural part of a true democracy (I dont condone looting as I see no benefit in it as far as positive change is concerned). The actions of the Ferguson police department, its administrators, the mayor of Ferguson, and the Governor of Missouri, in conjunction with homeland security initiatives implemented over the last decade, which were facilitated by the military industrial complex and the corporations that benefit from such a complex, as well as those traditional racist mindsets based on hate and fear passed down from generation to generation within families, are at the source of the REAL problem occurring within our society regarding police discrimination, and continue to make it difficult for individual citizens, communities, and cultures to at least attempt to live harmoniously and with fewer conflicts stemming from ignorance and fear, and instead lead to injustice, and the perpetuation of inequality and the unfair treatment of minorities. As we are unfortunately beginning to see more and more in similar stories over the last few years, it is seldom the behavior of the young minority that is to blame for their unjustified and untimely deaths at the hand of police, and is often a misguided overreaction of a police officer who is overzealous, angry, and power hungry. If you dont see it, then you are either privileged enough to not have been subjected to police profiling or discrimination, or you choose to remain ignorant to the facts. If you havent seen them already, please take a look at the links I have collected over the last week and read or watch the statistics, testimonials, and information provided in each. Hopefully, by becoming more informed and aware of the socioeconomic and cultural system that we all participate in, and being more cognizant of the flaws and strengths existing therein, we as individuals living within a free society can eventually correct these injustices through both individual action and through the implementation of more effective government policies, resulting in a justice system that promotes the fair treatment of ALL citizens, eventually leading to long-term collective change that benefits our country as a whole. Peace. https://youtube/watch?v=2GmZ1a5hnxo
