Speaker House of Representative Hon. Aminu Tambuwals defection to APC: Many are analysing this issue from the APC and PDP prisms. No, that should not be. This issue has far-reaching implications for our democracy. Let me explain. * The Speaker announced his defection to the opposition party, on the floor of the House. According to him,hes FORMALLY announcing his defection in view of developments in his home state. *For the records, Anenih, the PDP BOT Chairman was in Sokoto, Tambuwals state,a few weeks ago, to resolve the crisis in the Sokoto state chapter of the PDP. *Prior to his defection,Five PDP Governors defected to d APC. They said the PDP had been factionalised, hence their defection. These Governors are still in power in their various states. *Sequel to the defection of the Governors, their associates in the House of Reps also defected to the APC. They did not lose their seats. They are still members of the House. *Recently, Gov. Mimiko of Ondo defected from LP to PDP. He did not say the LP had been factionalised neither did he say LP had entered into any merger with the PDP. His reason for defecting is National Interest. This reason is not known to the Constitution. *Following Mimikos defection, his associates in the House immediately defected to the PDP. They did not lose their seats. They are still full members of the House. *But Tambuwal defected to APC & the Police authorities have withdrawn his security aides because they think the implication of his defection means that hes no longer the Speaker. To make matters worse, the Acting IG interpreted Section 68 of the Constitution. *Tell me, what power does the IG have to interprete any provision of d Constitution?Assuming the implication of Tambuwals defection is that he shall vacate his seat; the power to determine that lies solely with the Court and not d IG or anybody for that matter. *For ppl that do not know, Section 68 only applies to a member of the Senate or a member of the House. It Does not apply to d Senate President or Speaker. D Senate President/Speaker wil only vacate his seat if Section 50 of the Constitution is fulfilled. *Dont be deceived by GEJs humble appearance & rule of law mantra. The decision to withdraw Tambuwals aides is obviously known to him. Hes very undemocratic & fast becoming v desperate.Apart from being scared to contest against anybody in his party, hes also very scared of using d required democratic route to remove Tambuwal. Why try to remove Tambuwal through the back door if indeed the PDP has the majority in the House? Tambuwal is still the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Until hes constitutionally removed, his office MUST be respected..
