Spending the last of four weeks at US No.1 on this day in 1967, The Box Tops with The Letter. Written by Country songwriter Wayne Carson Thompson and produced by Dan Penn at American Sound Studio in Memphis, the song was one of a pile of demos presented to the group for their debut recording session. Despite the bands relative inexperience, sixteen year-old frontman Alex Chiltons gruff vocals, coupled with Penns sound effect of an aeroplane taking off, made for an atmospheric single and the master was duly picked up by Bell Records for their Mala subsidiary in July. Ranked the No.1 hit of 1967, The Letter also topped the charts in countries as far afield as Norway, Chile and Israel. In the UK it peaked at No. 5, while The Mindbenders homegrown cover taxied on the runway at No.42.
