Spinal thought 331. I mentioned wrist rests in my post yesterday. They come both for the keyboard and for the mouse - usually a jelly filled snake-like cushion. The idea is that if you are developing pain or discomfort in the hands and writs when typing they need to be supported. When I do office workstation assessments or consultations I usually see that the problem stems from the arms not getting their proper support from the back. When the spine and back is poorly aligned the chest tends to be slumped down in front, the shoulders are rounded forward and the arms and hands become heavy and dull. If a person is helped to sit better so that the back is lengthening and widening, the whole shoulder girdle (collarbones and shoulder blades) have a back to rest on and the arms can get their support from the back. They feel lighter and there is no need to lean down onto the desk to type or use the mouse. After all you don’t see a pianist need wrist rests at the keyboard! Once when I working in an office and I came to one woman who had these wrists rests, I asked if she had repetitive strain injury (RSI) pain. She said, no she didn’t but thought she should get these as prevention. I suggested that was courting the devil. She hadn’t thought of getting a walking stick to prevent her needing one when she got old, I suggested. Better to prevent having to need neither by learning to use yourself better and keep the spine healthy.
