Splitting Right Wing Hairs… The Simpson-Mazzoli Act was signed into law by Republican President Ronald Reagan back in 1986. The bill was passed with broad bipartisan support, in both chambers of Congress and was considered a model of cooperation at the time. Both Reagan and George H. W. Bush later expanded on it. The two former Presidents enlarged the number of people protected from deportation to prevent the breakup of families – one of the goals sought by President Obama. The central provision of that bill granted legal status to millions of residents. It was openly called amnesty by Conservatives and Liberals alike. Other aspects of the law included, negating the appeal of hiring illegal immigrants – as well as creating stricter border control measures. Anyone who chooses to quibble over whether the difference between what President Obama has done versus what previous Republican leaders have done is being grossly disingenuous - to put it mildly. ~Vern Hughes Via Patty Kennedy
