Spokane Police Officers Receive Hometown Hero Awards Yesterday, two Spokane Police Officers received American Red Cross “Hometown Hero” Awards for applying first aid and saving the life of a stabbing victim earlier this year. Yesterday, 11/12/14, the American Red Cross held their annual “Hometown Heroes” luncheon to honor local individuals and organizations for heroism and service in our community. Four Spokane Police officers were nominated as heroes: Ofc. Amy Woodyard, Ofc. Traci Ponto, Ofc. Jake Jensen, and Ofc. Bruce Palmer. Ofc. Woodyard and Ofc. Ponto received the “Hometown Hero” Award in the “Medical Hero” category for the aid they rendered to a stabbing victim. On 4/23/14, Ofc. Woodyard and Ofc. Ponto, along with several other SPD officers responded to a stabbing that occurred in the 1300 block of W. Boone. The victim had a large stab wound on his chest and was having difficulty breathing. Ofc. Woodyard did not have a chest seal bandage, however she was resourceful and applied a Ziploc bag on the victim’s sucking chest wound. Ofc. Woodyard noticed another stab wound on the left side of the victim’s neck and applied a Ziploc bag and pressure to this area until the medics arrived and applied an airtight seal and bandage. Ofc. Ponto noticed a knife wound on the victim’s mid-back area. She held pressure on that wound until an airtight seal could be applied. Medics transported the victim to the hospital for treatment of his life-threatening wounds. Ofc. Woodyard and Ofc. Ponto located and documented 16 stab wounds on the victim. Emergency room doctors as well as other first responders documented that if it were not for Ofc. Woodyard and Ofc Ponto’s life-saving actions, the victim’s stab wounds would have been fatal. The Spokane Police Department is proud to recognize the life-saving work of these officers as well as the other “Hometown Hero” award nominees.
