St. Johns River Water Management District Query — MY QUESTION: On average we pay between $95.00 to $100.00 a month for City Water and Reclaimed Water, so Im wondering how much Niagara Bottling, Inc. has to pay for the water theyre profiting from the sale of? Is the St. Johns River Water Management District getting a fair deal or is the water they take essentially a freebie? Written Notification: yes Comment Type: Concerned Permit# 20-069-114010-4 Project Name: Niagara Bottling, LLC Name: Gordon Hayduk Address: * * * City: Edgewater State: FL Zip: 32141 Phone Number Email: [email protected] THEIR ANSWER: Mr. Hayduk, Thank you for sharing your concerns about the application for renewal and modification of the consumptive use permit (CUP) that Niagara Bottling submitted to the St. Johns River Water Management District. The application, which the District received on Sept. 10, 2013, requests a total allocation of 910,000 gallons of water per day. During the application process, Niagara changed its application to request that the bulk of its withdrawal for its bottled water operation come from the Lower Floridan aquifer by 2016. By utilizing the Lower Floridan aquifer, and reducing its Upper Floridan withdrawal, the request is consistent with one of the strategies being developed in the Central Florida Water Initiative (CFWI). The application will be considered at the Feb. 11 public Governing Board meeting in Palatka. Niagara DOES NOT PAY ANYTHING FOR THEIR WATER, they pay for the infrastructure to get the water out of the ground and treat the water. This is much the same as utilities, they don’t pay to pump the water out of the ground, but do sell it to make a profit. (NOTE: THEIR WATER?) Board members will review the staff’s report and recommendation, and letters and emails received from the public, before making a decision on whether to issue the permit. Members of the public will also have an opportunity to speak at the Board’s meeting. We have posted facts about the application, review process and public input opportunities on our website at floridaswater/facts/NiagaraBottlingpermit.html. As new information becomes available on the application, we are continuing to update that web page. Again, thank you for writing and for sharing your concerns, which have been entered into the official permitting record relating to the application.
