Staff Pick Saturdays Dana on Kris Kuksi Kris Kuksi’s intricate sculptures are the result of his unique and meticulous technique. Rendered in immaculate detail, the assemblages evoke a grandeur reminiscent of the Baroque and Rococo periods. Though their ornate aesthetic seems suited for marble or gilded bronze, his mixed media works are composed of a carefully chosen collection of commonplace throwaway objects that Kuksi delicately combines into symmetrical, harmonious amalgams that appear deceptively decorative at first glance. An American artist in the genre of Fantastic Realism, Kuksi’s work has been described as “a study of timelessness and intricacies, reminiscent of lost civilizations, deities and ruins – perfectly preserved.” To create these ornate assemblages, Kuski obsessively collects and arranges a variety of cultural flotsam and jetsam – knick-knack figurines, mechanical parts, jewelry, various consumerist debris – carefully curating his protracted collection and rendering each item a precious and integral object in his sculptures. Each piece requires countless hours to assemble; the end result is a small world that can be explored for just as long. Kuski’s sculptures embody the trademarks of his philosophy and his personal view of our turbulent world. He feels that much of mankind is frivolous and fragile, being driven primarily by greed and materialism. His characters are embroiled in the chaos of good and evil, left and right, night and day– hanging in the balance between our contemporary industrial world and a romantic and wistful past. Kuski hopes that his art exposes the fallacies of modern man, unveiling a new level of awareness to the viewer.
