Stay alert to changing road conditions 04/02/2014 April showers bring May flowers – and challenging driving conditions. Roads can be dry in the sun and icy in the shade, making spring driving just as challenging as driving during the winter. Here are some tips to help you and your customers navigate constantly changing road conditions. Slow down in inclement weather Rainy, foggy and misty conditions reduce visibility. Slow down in shaded areas and on bridges or overpasses. These areas tend to freeze first. Reducing your speed on highways can also help prevent hydroplaning when roads are slick. Do not use cruise control on loose gravel or in rainy or snowy conditions. If your vehicle starts to slip or hydroplane, cruise control may cause the engine to rev resulting in you losing control of the vehicle. Keep your windshield clear Changing weather conditions can cause your windshield to fog. Turn on your fan and defroster to keep your windshield, and view of the road, clear. Keep an eye out for pedestrians. They can be especially difficult to see in inclement weather. Avoid driving through puddles You never know how deep a puddle is, or what it may be hiding. There could be a pothole hiding under the puddle’s surface. A puddle that appears shallow could also be hiding a dip in the road.
