Steve signing in at 8:01 AM. A line of showers with gusty winds - TopicsExpress

Steve signing in at 8:01 AM. A line of showers with gusty winds moved across the three county area about an hour ago and is now located to our east from Winston Salem to Charlotte and weakening a little. The heaviest rain locally has moved into Caldwell County with another band of showers over much of McDowell County moving eastward. It appears, at least on radar, that much of the rain is thinning out and after this next band of showers passes through, our rain chances decrease. We may see some sun this afternoon. Temperatures are mild, mainly mid to upper 50s. We may see upper 50s to lower 60s in several spots later this morning/early afternoon especially from Morganton to Hickory but temperatures will begin by mid-afternoon and later as the colder air behind the front settles in. Well cloud over again tonight as a northeast flow and wedge pattern sets up; after midnight, rain chances increase again and the situation may be a little tricky by daybreak Tuesday with temperatures in the low to mid 30s. Freezing rain is a possibility in the higher elevations and maybe even briefly along the I-40 corridor, may be something to watch during the early morning commute. Tuesday itself features mainly a cold rain, temperatures around 40 with the rain continuing until another front sweeps it out Wednesday morning. Wednesday itself could be the nicest day of the seven day period once the rain and clouds move out with afternoon high temperatures in the low 60s. Thursday will be colder but mostly sunny, 45 to 50F in the afternoon. Clouds will be on the increase Friday but the precipitation picture this weekend is anything but clear with little or no agreement among the models on timing, temperature or precipitation type. While the potential remains for a significant winter storm, the more likely scenario, based on forecast model performance and weather history, is for mixed precipitation at the start of the event gradually changing over to rain everywhere, even the mountains, before it all ends. However, details are still lacking and we may need a few more days before we can make a confident prediction of this weekends weather. Once whatever occurs moves out of the area, a return to colder weather early next week is probable.
