Strike calls evokes mixed response =>The strike call by Hurriyat Conference (G) to protest the landing of Indian Army troops in Kashmir this day in 1947 evoked mixed response on sunday. The heart of Srinagar city was abuzz with activities as people in large number in their private vehicles visited weekly ‘Sunday Market’. Barring few stray incidents of stone pelting in Old City and Baramulla, the day passed off peacefully in Srinagar and other major towns of Kashmir. According to reports, most of the shops and other business like petrol pumps and private offices remained closed in the city and major towns of the valley. However, there was little impact of strike call in Up Town of Srinagar as majority of shops and business establishments were open in the interiors of city like Jawahar Nagar, Raj Bagh, Solina, Ram Bagh, Natipora, Sonawar, Dalgate and Maharaja Bazar. Hundreds of people from different localities thronged Sunday Market in Lal Chowk Srinagar. Vendors and slop sellers did their routine business during the day. However, a complete shutdown was observed in Old City where transport remained off the roads and all shops were closed. However, in the interiors of the city and in Eid Gah and other localities shops were found open. Some educational institutions remained open on account of annual examinations of Class 8th. Hundreds of policemen donning riot gear were deployed in the sensitive areas in Srinagar and other towns to thwart any possible protest. Amid shutdown, scores of youth resorted to stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel near Sheraz Cinema. Pedestrians alleged that soon after stone pelting incident, CRPF used force and beat them without any provocation. Reports said that life was affected in Islamabad, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian districts of south Kashmir. However, private transport was seen plying on the roads. Shops, and other business institutions remained closed. In north Kashmir life was paralyzed following in Baramulla, Kupwara, Handwara and Bandipora areas. But thin private traffic plied on the roads. Situation remained calm in volatile area of Sopore. However, in General Bus Stand Baramulla clashes erupted between youth and police after scores of youth pelted stones of police and CRPF personnel.
