Subject: MEDITATION- CALL UPON THE LORD AND BE AT REST, OH MY SOUL! (Psalm 116 : 1-2)- “I love the LORD, for He heard my voice; He heard my cry for mercy. Because He turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.” Have you ever imagined Jesus singing? Often we think of him speaking of course and we have those vital words recorded for us. However after the last supper we told that Jesus and His disciples sang praise to God. In Mark 14:26 we read “When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” It is very likely that the words Jesus sang that night were from the Psalms, including Psalm 116. This brings even greater depth to the words that speak of calling on the name of The Lord, confidently in times of both distress and peace. So often calling on the name of the Lord becomes a last resort rather a first response. In this beautiful, love filled psalm we see our need to call upon and trust in the name of the Lord as it speaks of who God is, and reminds us of what He has done in the past, shows us what He is doing in the present and points us toward what He will do in the future. Verses 7-9 “Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you. For you, LORD, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living.” Knowing that God not only hears our cries, but answers in His perfect will, enables us to live this life to the full, while looking forward to life with Him in heaven. Verse 12 poses an important question for us. “how can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me?” And the rest of the psalm gives us the answer, that our response to God’s salvation and goodness to us must be to worship and witness to God, not only privately but definitely publicly. Verses 17-19 “I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the LORD. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people, in the courts of the house of the LORD—in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord.” Let us then never stop calling on the name of the Lord together in worship and witness, praying that others will come to experience His rescue and love.
