Sunday 24th November 2013 Supermarine Ladies 23-0 Wimbledon Ladies A massive team effort from Supermarine gave them the win they needed as they managed to keep a clean sheet against Wimbledon. It wasn’t an easy win though as the visitors attacked hard and made Supermarine work to keep them off the try line. Supermarine started strong using the strength of their pack to take the ball forward. Wimbledon put up a strong defence but Supermarine kept on pushing which paid off with a try for prop, Sarah Holmes. There were times when Supermarine found themselves defending right on their try line with Wimbledon driving them back, however, some excellent tackles by the hosts prevented Wimbledon from scoring. The half time score stood at 5-0. Supermarine kicked off the second half giving Wimbledon possession but Supermarine were quick to defend, pressuring all the time. Supermarine turned over several scrums and a try for second row Sam Watts came from a brilliant pick up from the back of a scrum. A penalty for Supermarine gave them 3 points, thanks to Natalie Williams, when they opted to kick for the posts. The game continued with both sides playing some excellent rugby and the ball was turned over several times. No.8 Hannah Sheratt was next to score for the home side as once again they pushed Wimbledon back. And a fantastic move by fly half, Claire Legg, created an overlap, allowing the ball to go through the hands of the back line giving winger, Hannah Gardin space to take the ball over the line. Team spirit was high once the final whistle was blown with the final score at 23-0. Forward of the match was earned by flanker, Teresa Bickell for her great support throughout and winger, Hannah Gardin, was awarded back of the match. The win today was a great team effort with everyone putting in a great performance. A supporter from the sideline commented ’it was the best ladies rugby they had ever seen’. A big thank you to coach, Jamie Barrett, for his ongoing commitment to the ladies, which has certainly paid off. Supermarine now have a week off before their next league fixture which sees them travel down to Devon for what is certain to be a tough match against Plymouth Albion.
