Swabi Seed Research and Development Company is a private entity and has been doing its research and development for the last five years on hybrid development of vegetables, wheat and cotton. Now it is in a position to produce its hybrids of cotton on large scale. It developed about 120 hybrids last year which in the preliminary yield trials exhibited very encouraging results. Average of all 69 hybrids significantly outyielded the parents by more than 50%. Some six hybrids outperformed the rest of the hybrids by more than 30% and the best parents by a high margin. This indicates that using F1 hybrids after confirmation can transform the existing dwindling cotton industry in the country with tremendous improvement in yield as well as quality.
