Syrian court accepts presidential bid from Assad, two other candidates A Syrian court said on Sunday that it had accepted requests from President Bashar Assad and two other candidates, Hassan Abdallah al-Nouri and lawmaker Maher Abdel-Hafiz Hajjar, to run in the presidential election next month. Assads international opponents and the rebels fighting to overthrow him have dismissed the vote as a farce. Syria’s opposition leaders in exile are banned from standing by a clause in the constitution which says a candidate must have lived the country continuously for 10 years. A separate clause also states that any candidates must have the backing of 35 members of the pro-Assad parliament, which effectively rules out any dissenting voices.Authorities have not said how they will hold the vote in a country where six million people have been displaced and large areas remain either outside government control or gripped in fighting.
