TGITF (Thank God Its Tech Friday!) Today: Nike Free 5.0 - the whole Free family, what is it and who is it for? Nike Free are designed as running shoes. They are the epitome of the Nike natural motion philosophy. Natural motion refers to reducing the impact the shoe itself has on your natural running gait and therefore allowing you to "run free" or with more natural motion than a heavily structured shoe. It is important to keep in mind with this product though that while it is a running shoe it was designed with the intention of being more of a training tool and not your everyday, all distances, all surfaces runner. This is because the Free family has a distinctive outersole - it is sliced both vertically and horizontally through the entire sole, and the depth of the cuts ( or "syping") extend into the mid sole of the shoe. This creates incredible levels of flexibility. As such, as a training tool the free , by encouraging natural motion, works the muscles and soft tissue in the lower leg more. Using this shoe 10% of your running time for shorter distances, drill or form work or short intervals will help strengthen your feet but adaption to this type of natural motion shoe should be gradual. It is a bit like having a gym workout for your feet while you run so dont go too hard too soon. The Free family also have lower heel to toe offsets , like other more minimal footwear and great upper technology ( flywire for enhanced fit and feel in the midfoot) to keep the shoe feeling snug and fast. For me this shoe has been a stable in my recovery periods after longer workouts - I dont run in mine, but I do use them casually, for travel and often after a long run on a weekend to help keep my feet and calves moving. For me , this means less soreness in the days to come. Nike Free 5.0 and others in the Free family are best suited to those with more neutral feet and no injury concerns but can be worn by many if individual needs are considered.
