THE Apostles hearts were full of pain For their dear Lord so lately slain, By rebel servants doomed to die A death of cruel agony. WITH gentle voice the angel gave The women tidings from the grave; Fear not, your Master ye shall see; He goes before to Galilee. THEN, hastening on their eager way The joyful tidings to convey, Their Lord they met, their living Lord. And falling at his feet adored. THE Eleven, when they hear, with speed To Galilee forthwith proceed, That there once more they may behold The Lords dear face, as he foretold. O LORD of all with us abide In this our joyful Eastertide; From every weapon death can wield Thine own redeemed for ever shield. ALL praise be thine, O risen Lord, From heath to endless life restored; All praise to God the Father be And Holy Ghost eternally. Amen. Matins hymn from the Common of Apostles and Evangelists In Paschaltide [Tristes erant Apostoli] ++++++++ O God, who didst exalt blessed Mark the Evangelist through the grace of preaching thy Gospel: grant, we beseech thee, that we may ever profit by his teaching, and be defended by his prayers. Through Jesus Christ thy Son, our Lord, who with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen. [Collect, St. Mark the Evangelist, April 25/May 8] ++++++++ From the Book by St. Jerome, Priest Lives of Illustrious Men MARK, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, wrote a short Gospel at the request of the brethren at Rome embodying what he had heard Peter tell. When Peter had heard this he approved it and published it to be read to the Churches by his authority. So, taking the Gospel which he himself composed, Mark went to Egypt and first preaching Christ at Alexandria he formed a Church so admirable in doctrine and continence of living that he constrained all followers of Christ to his example. PHILO, most learned of the Jews, seeing the first Church at Alexandria still predominantly Jewish, wrote a book on their manner of life as something creditable to his nation, telling how, as Luke says, the believers had all things in common at Jerusalem; so he, saw and recorded what was done at Alexandria, under the learned Mark. He died in the eighth year of Nero, and was buried at Alexandria, Anianus succeeding him. ++++++++ Art thou only a stranger, and hast not heard concerning Jesus, how they delivered him to be condemned to death? alleluia. [Benedictus antiphon, Thursday, second week of Easter] ++++++++ Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold and one Shepherd, alleluia. [Magnificat antiphon, Thursday, second week of Easter] ++++++++ I am a stranger upon earth; O hide not thy commandments from me. My soul breaketh out for the very fervent desire that it hath alway unto thy judgements. [Psalm 118[119]:19-20]
