THE MAIDS RIGHT TO A LAWYER: Under Article 28 of the Constitution, anyone charged with an offence that carries a sentence of Life imprisonment or death is supposed to be provided a lawyer at the expense of the state. This is part of ones right to a fair hearing. In relation to the maid who was caught on that now infamous video allegedly mistreating a child, if the she is charged with Attempted Murder which carries a maximum sentence of Life in prison, then she will be entitled to a lawyer provided for by the state. However, this is not the case for offences that do not have a maximum sentence of death and life in prison. In such cases, then one is supposed to either represent him/ herself, or seek private legal representation or legal aid.
