THE MESSAGE OF MARAH: CALVARYS CROSS . . . Following their departure from the Red Sea, the children of Israel, led by Moses traveled THREE DAYS in the wilderness and found no water. (Exodus 15:23). Coming to the place called Marah, which had several springs of water that appeared refreshing, the very thirsty and now very angry Israelites found instead, the waters to be extremely too bitter for any of them to drink. Turning their anger upon Moses their leader, Moses cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet. (vs 25) First of all beloved, water or seas are often representative of people; in fact, masses of people. The tree which was thrown into the waters and which, incidentally, was prepared before hand, is representative, of course, of our Savior Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world. . . (1 Peter 1:20) This Old Testament incident then is to be seen in this light relative to its New Testament parallel which is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Beloved, God came to this vast sea of humanity expecting them to be sweet to both his taste and his nostrils but instead found ALL OF THEM to be bitter to his taste. The Psalmist put it this way; God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Psalm 53:2,3). This of course did not catch God by surprise because he had already, in advance, prepared a tree (the cross). And on the hill called Calvary, this tree, upon which hung his only begotten son Jesus Christ, was thrown into the sea [of humanity, the whole world] making all who believed to no longer be bitter but sweet and thus acceptable to the taste of God. Remember, Jonah, as a previously spoken of type of Christ on the cross, (see an earlier post) was also thrown into a raging sea [of humanity] and that sea became calm! Beloved, there is simply no getting around the Cross. In fact, I often ask myself this question: Was it for crimes that I had done He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree! At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight, And now I am happy all the day! Be blessed!
