THE NO-KILL DILEMMA...I want to start with what i have said for over 20 years...Euthanasia should never be used as a form of population control in companion animals.. Even in the U.S. i have not seen one no-kill shelter that could not be prosecuted for neglect or cruelty. I am not alone in saying the no-kill movement has been one of the worse things to happen to companion animals.I due believe in low kill, only euthanizing animals that our suffering and in great pain. I also think that Nathan Winograd believes the same, but here is the rub..Who decides what is suffering and to much pain..For me it is unfortunately also about how much does it cost to correct the problem..It is not as simple as we have X amount of animals and X amount of homes. There very much is an over population problem if we want good, responsible and loving homes. Do i think the big humane societies are worthy of respect and monetary donations, NO WAY. We have had the same approach for 200 years and we still have many of the same problems..These groups set on millions of dollars, yet education and spay/neuter are not the real priority. The no-kill and collectors always have far to many animals to take care of properly and are inherently cruel..The answer is dont give blindly and work with grass roots group that have low overhead and treat the animals as individuals. The question when is it to much, and there is not an easy answer..But far to many groups look for the worse cases and use them as fundraiser..Yes its nice to spend 5000.00 usd on 1 animal when you could save dozens more for the same money..I am lucky in that i am a veterinarian and i can do bone surgeries for very little. I am ashamed of my profession for the lack of both ethics and compassion that exists. The good news is we are gaining ground, just 20 years ago we killed closer to 25,000,000 companion animals a year and now more like 8,000,000+ a year..Dont quote me the bullshit humane society stats that are less that is political not real..We still have counties that dont even have regulations on cats and they dont keep stats on them, plus there are many small town police departments that kill animals almost for fun and they dont get recorded either..Things are better, but not really do to the rich humane societies but more do to the animal rights movement of the 80s and 90s that really moved the social conscious forward..Your awareness has meant that more animals are adopted from shelters than ever before and that AKC is at an all time low..We live in a country that has about 76% of its dogs sterilized and 87% of its cats. Unfortunately, it just doesnt take that many ignorant, money hungry individuals to keep the problem going..Cats are about 45 times more prolific and dogs about 12 times more prolific than humans..The number one cause of death of companion animals in America is still euthanasia..YOU, should ask your vet what he or she is doing about it and if they cant give you a good answer then i suggest getting a new vet. Shelters should not be death camps and should be as their name implies, a place to temporarily house pets in the time of stress or crises or natural disaster or end of life decisions. THAT IS MY FUTURE FOR COMPANION ANIMALS. Not killing and not warehousing in deplorable conditions.. Very easily attainable if we only research and give based on what works..The pie is only so big so use your money wisely and be pat of the solution and stop supporting the status quot.If hundreds of million of dollars has not worked so far it will not work in the future..I will leave you with one other positive note the veterinary profession is now mostly females and because of that there is growing compassion. Doesnt say much for my gender but the change is coming, unfortunately we have to wait for the fat old white guys to die..Thank god they mostly eat meat and are unhealthy so they cant live to long..GIVE WITH A PURPOSE AND LOOK FOR THE OUTCOME...
