THE POST BAG: Servant Leaders Editor, The Constitution is not the only requirement for social contract. The promises and assurances made to the innocent souls of our land all require to be protected and guided by honest leaders of integrity. It is high time Zambians woke up from slumber and distinguished the abnormal from the normal. Having a healthy mind, body and spirit cannot be debated because passing of medical examinations is the requirement for any Zambian worker at all levels in formal employment. What more the highest office of our land involved in making serious decisions for local and international affairs? People are faced with serious challenges in communities and compounds, such as lack of proper water supplies, poverty, poor health provision, infrastructure, agriculture, education etc. How in a normal society can people live for years and years, minus water supplies in their homes? In many parts of Zambia, even the shallow wells have since dried up, but people have to find some alternatives like going to nearby rivers and any other sources, inspite of the quality of the basic commodity. Others have been killed by crocodiles fetching water from rivers. Leaders should be serious with people’s lives. Human beings can only live once on this earth. Life can never be bought, no matter how wealthy an individual is. Money and all precious materials of this life cannot purchase any kind of life. Politics is not about taking advantage of the people by deception, deceit, nepotism, corruption, lies, lawlessness, violence, crime, tribalism, racism and filling one’s tummy at the expense of the poor. Leaders at all levels should and must never oppress the poor and the voiceless in society. Priorities are cardinal and important in life. Monies which have been used on non-priority areas could have turned the suffering in our societies around. Zambians should and must realise that they have independent minds, lives, families and challenges. The souls and lives of Zambians are above any single individual requirements, be it a councillor, chief, present or former leaders. Our nation is what it is today by our own dealings, actions and doing. God created human beings in His own likeness. True, honest, diligent, God-fearing leaders are what we need for our young country. A true leader is not a master, king or queen, but a servant of the people. Jesus said foxes have holes, birds have nests, and people have homes. But alas the Son of God had nowhere to lay his head. Remember the owner of these souls is watching our intentions, motives, whether bad or good. It is not the soil or land of Zambia which was declared a Christian nation but people’s lives, character, life-styles and care for one another. Our leaders should be dili-gent, have love, integrity, and be honest enough to manage the affairs of this lovely country and its people. Finally, a good name is better than the wealth and riches of this world, for the latter is vanity, empty, futile and like chasing after the wind. God bless Zambia. Patrick Munyimba, Luanshya
