THE RELEVANCE OF HOOKES LAW TO NATION BUILDING ----------------------------------- Gentlemen, In the pendulum of the mind, An English scientist,Robert HOOKES propounded a theory in 1660, which states that stress is proportional to strain, provided elastic limit is not exceeded This theory is multi faceted and can be applied to several situation and circumstance in our private lives, business and nation building, it is deep and remains a classical study in science and engineering, How does it relate to nation building? How has the application been positively true in our clime, How has it helped to uphold the principle of truth and reason The HOOKES law essentially, clearly states the relationship between force and elasticity Force is applied, strain withstands and elasticity is the limit and the ability to respond to changes or responsiveness, Nigeria has been in political turmoil since 1947, when the late sage chief obafemi awolowo described Nigeria as a mere geographical expression, almost 70years, we are yet to walk the talk, Now, would it be right to say, this nation has defeated this theory and has also made a mince meat of every management theory and principle? That it is standing, with the massive corruption, collapse of family values, political and economic instability, religious intolerance, wholesale bigotry, collapse of infrastructures and absence of security, The case of Nigeria has defiled human comprehension and has become extremely difficult to analyse, yet, we carry on, as if life is normal in Nigeria, we have all become NFA (no future ambition) But in reality, it is the system that has killed our thinking faculties and the ability to project into the future, when today is not even realistic, We have exceeded our elastic limit and the bubble may burst soon, infact sooner than expected, I say unequivocally and inexplicably that Nigeria has collapsed, that we are still standing is the 8th wonder of the world and a miracle, if at all it exists, In the last twenty five(25) years, only two industries hold our prosperity as a people, RELIGION and POLITICS Every moron and imbecile now has a church and a founder and general overseer now litter our landscape, They feed on our gullibility and moronic tendencies, elevating dogmatism and mediocrity to an unimaginable height, psychophancy and influence peddling are now sub-sectors in the industry, Set up a company, it will not grow in ten(10) years, but a church will grow in two(2) years, almost becoming a company to be quoted in the stock exchange, How can we grow, when merit has been substituted with favoritism, How can we grow with a private sector tied to the apron strings of the public sector How can we grow when the private sector does not have a clear cut direction, policy somersault is a regular occurrence, How can we grow in an absence of Research and development? Even in our private lives Discussing corruption and the public sector in Nigeria, are issues that can be put together as a book for students of management and public administration, The issues are too deep and only a complete collapse to create an avenue for rebuilding a new nation, Robert HOOKES in his grave today will be angry with Nigeria, if only he could resurrect to see how his theory and intellectual works has been rubbished by Nigeria and Nigerians. MATTERS ARISING ABOKI ------------------------- I am compelled to add my voice to the popular song in Nigeria, decentralisation Weak federal and regional autonomy, It will never happen in Nigeria, Well, never say never, if we have revolution tommorow, fine, which I very much doubt, going by our history as a people, orientation and core values, The situation is pathetic and needs a drastic solution, Our elasticity should ideally be a big advantage, but in reality, it is not, it has become our greatest undoing and only a selfless leader, devoid of arrogance, sectional agenda, and with a bare it all mentality can take us out of the woods, Alternatively, a collapse, total collapse or deliberate demolition to throw up the building of a new edifice that will be called a new Nigeria Is my desire, I sympathise with Robert HOOKES Gentlemen, when shall we walk the talk?
