THE SUBURBS OF SMYRNA by P E T E R M E H T I D I S The suburbs of Smyrna , especially in the 19th and 20th century were an integral part of economic and social life . The exponential growth of Izmir from the 19th century is reflected in the expansion . Until the early 19th century the city extended until the area of Fasoula . The 1840 route Kokkinovafeion ( Red Bogiatzidika )( this means red dyeing)- central district of the city in the 20th century - was full marshes , with a few homes where lived painters . In the 1920s the city limits reached as far north as the Daragatsi beyond Punta , to the east by the river bridge Meli and east to Dermen Tepe . Another source , however, indicate a population of 3,000 residents and 2,500 Greeks. The Narlikioi ( village of pomegranate ) , half an hour from Vournova , had a population of 500 inhabitants , of whom 350 Greeks , or other source 700 . Vournova In command belonged to the Turkish villages Siklari ( 3000 inhabitants) , Nalntoukioi and Cavaco Nteres . The valley of Agia Anna , on the way to Voutza , was known for its namesake pilgrimage to the slopes of Pagos . To the southeast of Smyrna meet suburban Melantia ( Karatas ) , Sfaktiria ( Salahane ) , Kallithea ( Quarantine ) , Gkiostepe ( Enopi ) , Kokargiali ( Resadie , Myrakti ) , Linz , Baltsova , Manor St. George and Narlis Dere ( at the foot of Mount Two Sibling ) . Karatas had three schools ( boys and girls Greek , Armenian and Frenhisrael ) and the Navy and gymnastics association Pelops . Quarantine was Greek community school and private ( X. Papaemmanouil ) , Greek-French School ( the Nikolopoulos ) , a military hospital and the club Miramar waterfront . In Gkiostepe were Greek school for boys and girls , international school and French school . Salahane( Sfaktiria ) was known to Smyrna for the famous elevator the lift height of 35 meters leading to the hills of the region , where the Church of the Assumption . In Salahane were Greek mixed school , Israelite and factory of sesame oil and tahini D. Tachintzi’s . The Seidikioi ( Sevdikiou , Himerius Erasinos ) , 15 km south, connected with Smyrna by railway . It had a population of 8000 inhabitants , of whom only a few were Turks . In pentataxio boys 150 students enrolled in 5 classes 120 girls and 240 infants in the nursery . Other suburbs of Smyrna was Daragatsi the Tepetziki the Chatzilari , three wells and further away ( south and southwest ) Tzimovani the 1500 Greek residents , the Malkatze 700 Greeks and Greeks Develiki 500 . The Chatzilari , half an hour from Smyrna , had 1,000 inhabitants , many of whom worked at the mill Antonopoulos and Samiou . In Daragatsi there were many factories: six steam mills , nine which made coachmen , three tanneries and three ice factories . The Tepetziki abstained five minutes from the river bridge Meli . In Three wells lived three hundred Greeks.
