THIS DAY IN HISTORY: 2nd January 2012 (by Amma Fosuah Poku) The Occupy Nigeria protest movement began following a New Year’s Day announcement by President Goodluck Jonathan of the removal of a fuel subsidy which overnight saw the cost of fuel products increase by 120%, with prices for many other goods and service rocketing by as much as 200%. Thousands of Nigerians throughout the country took to the streets, participated in rallies and demonstrated. The state responded with brutal force and the first casualty of the protest, 23 year old Muyideen Mustapha, was shot dead by police in Ilorin, Kwara State, on 3rd January 2012. By 9th January 2012 Nigerian trade unions organised a nationwide general strike which did not end until the fuel subsidy was reinstated, albeit at level which was less than when it was first removed. In his 2015 New Year’s Day address President Jonathan highlighted that the two biggest issues facing Nigeria are corruption and security. Producer Ishaya Bako made a documentary about the Occupy Nigeria movement which was banned by the Nigerian government for being too provocative.
