THURSDAY AM FORECAST FOR ORKNEY + SHETLAND Today: Bright with blustery showers, these heavy and wintry at times with the risk of thunder, although they will become more scattered through the afternoon. Feeling rather cold in the fresh to strong west to southwest winds. Maximum Temperature: 6 Deg C (43 Deg F) Tonight: Mainly dry in the evening, then outbreaks of rain overnight. Becoming stormy across Orkney by the end of the night, winds turning into the west with gusts of 100mph possible. Minimum Temperature: 3 Deg C (37 Deg F) Friday: Remaining stormy across Orkney during the morning, and possibly southern Shetland, but the west to northwest winds decreasing quickly in the afternoon. Squally showers gradually dying out. Maximum Temperature: 7 Deg C (45 Deg F) Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Another storm expected early on Saturday affecting both Orkney and Shetland, westerly winds gusting more than 80mph. Squally snow showers. Showers and winds easing on Sunday. Storms again on Monday. Coastal Waters Forecast for Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney Wind: West 5 to 7, backing south 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 later in north. Visibility: Good, occasionally moderate later. Weather: Showers, rain later. Sea State: Slight in Moray Firth, otherwise moderate or rough, occasionally very rough later in north. Coastal Waters Forecast for Shetland Isles Wind: Northwest 6 or 7, occasionally gale 8, backing west 5 to 7, occasionally 4 for a time, then backing south 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 later.
